This charming tune by Hosono was arranged for his tribute album by Van Dyke Parks. It was recorded in Parks' home in Los Angeles, December 2006.
"YMC" was produced by Parks and Matt Cartsonis under the direction of
Cartsonis also served as musician and recordist.
Parks decided to add only a few instrumentalists that
He admires most, knowing their devotion to him, and the
Superior performance each would bring to the effort.
The arrangement imitates the defining hi-fi stereo works of Esquivel
("the King of Space-Age pop). There are no lyrics per se. Parks preferred
the Esperanto scat singing of Esquivel's works (notice the use of words
like "Zoo zoo Zoom", "ba da Bing", and such non sequitor syllables that
delight the western ear). "Scat" seemed the ideal medium for a multi-lingual
global market, and well-suited to the jazz sensibilities of vocalist Juliana
Ray. The Hosono lyrics and music suggest a Caribbean approach. That's
reflected in this arrangement.
All the musicians were honored by this opportunity. Especially, Parks, who's
loved and admired the works of Hosono for over 30 years.
